September showers and a few others

I thought the saying went something about April Showers....but seems like my month of September has been full of cookie orders for showers...baby showers, that is!

I just adore these chicks!  I think they are my favorite cookie to make...they are just so bright...and fun...and pretty perfect for all those little baby peeps!

Here's an order I did for a heart association luncheon.... I think the leopard print ribbon added an out of the ordinary touch, and it also coordinated with the theme.

I made just a few cookies for one of our favorite friends...He turned the BIG TWO last week....and I thought these bright birthday cookies would be fun!  This little man is cute as a button....I ADORE his blond curls and big blue eyes...and his laugh....oh my.....never heard anything sweeter!  Hope you had a great day Mr. W!

And back to those baby showers...these cookies were jungle animals...and butterflies...I wanted to mimic the animals from the tiny prints jungle invitation....didn't quite master it...but at least I got the colors in the same shade! I think the giraffes and butterflies were my favorite.  The butterflies were mini's....and I think mini's might just be another new favorite of mine.  They are bite size and cute...And, hey, they always say good things come in small packages, right?

As for the indentation and air bubble issue, yes I am no stranger to these problems and they make me so upset! I too use Mariam's recipe-LOVE IT-and what I do when I am piping very small areas is I beat the icing an additional couple of minutes. This makes it into almost a meringue type consistency which holds its structure better. This helps the indenting problem a lot and the air bubbles a little. I just make sure to pop them all when I see them. It does have its down sides as well but I think it is worth my cookies holding their decorated structure. The down side is the the dried consistency has a more airy texture to it so it is not that crisp candy coating texture that you get with royal icing, however, it still tastes just as good! Well my dear, let me know if this makes sense or if you have any other suggestions. I love your blog and will now be a follower! I love your background too! Who did your blog, I need a new look for mine!

  3. Hi Amalia, I actually do not add water to thin the royal icing until I am ready to use it. I generally make the large batch, divide it in containers into roughly the amounts for the colors that I think I will need. I pipe outlines, words, and decorations in the original thickness of the royal icing without thinning it, otherwise it runs way to much. I then either use the extra after I have piped what I need and water that down or just use some of the original to water down and color for the flooding portions. If they are large areas that I am flooding I use plastic bottles (I find they make less air bubbles). I tried to use the same thickness for outlining and flooding but it just doesn't work, it is worth it to me to just spend a few extra minutes and maybe wasting a little frosting.

Thanks for the info on your friend, I will have to check it out! Have a great Sunday!

  4. You are no bother! I love trading tips, it is so fun knowing others with similar problems and we can all help each other! I am so glad you came by my blog so we can share! Yes, I did change it, wanted more of a fall feel, haha, just did one of the blogger templates is all, I am not skilled enough to do much more than that! Well have a great start to your week!

  5. So I do beat it on the lowest speed for about 9 minutes, then turn it up to medium for the last couple of minutes :)
